ABOUT ME

I’m Sophie, and this is Sophie’s Choice - it’s not about choosing between two impossible options, but about finally choosing myself.

At 40, I found myself in a place I didn’t quite expect to be. I’m not on the property ladder, I don’t have a high-flying career and I haven’t started a family.  In my 30's I received a late autism diagnosis and began to question what it actually meant to build a life that felt like mine.

So, I’m buying a van and I’m naming it Bessel.

For a long time, I felt as though my life had been written in the language of other people: diagnoses, statistics, probabilities, expectations and categories. Somewhere within all of that, I began to feel like N−1; the inconvenient exception, the outlier who sat outside the expected pattern.

But I have spent enough time measuring myself against lives I thought I was supposed to be living.

Now I can simply live this one - my one.  N=1.

The idea of travelling isn’t new to me. Travel has been woven through much of my life. I’ve spent years exploring with a camera in hand - from India and the West Bank to Nepal, Morocco and New Zealand. Those journeys taught me that the best experiences rarely unfold exactly as expected.

I’ve spent much of my life fascinated by psychology, human behaviour and the ways we try to make sense of ourselves. Carl Jung’s ideas about the shadow, individuation and becoming who we actually are have stayed with me, particularly through the twists and turns of recent years.

I also believe that some of life’s most important lessons cannot always be learned from books. They arrive through experience - sometimes gently, sometimes painfully.  They teach us humility, perspective and what really matters.

This website is where those threads come together: van life, photography, travel, psychology and the occasional musing about what it means to be human.
